Introduction

Smler's attribution feature credits purchases back to the creator or influencer whose link drove them, even when the sale happens months after the click.

Someone taps a creator's link, browses, leaves, and buys six weeks later. A normal click report calls that a bounce. Attribution in Smler credits that purchase back to the creator who actually drove it, however long it takes.

It exists for two people at once, and this whole section is written for both:

  • Marketers and creator managers use it to run campaigns: hand every influencer their own link, watch revenue roll in per creator, and connect a store so nothing needs a developer at all.

  • Developers use it to wire up the three pieces (a snippet, an identify call, and a server side conversion event) that make long window attribution actually work.

If you only read one more page, pick Campaigns & Creator Links if you are a marketer, or Developer Quickstart if you are a developer.

How it works, in one paragraph

Every click on your domain gets a short lived attribution id attached to it. A small script on your site remembers that id in the visitor's browser, in a first party cookie where possible, for up to 400 days. When a purchase happens, days or months later, you send Smler the sale (either yourself, or automatically through a connected store) and Smler matches it back to the click, the creator, and the campaign that started it.

A tour of the Attribution page

Open Attribution in the sidebar for any of your branded domains (the shared smler.in domain cannot carry an attribution id, so you need a domain of your own first). Once it is turned on for that domain, you get seven tabs:

  • Overview: revenue tracked, revenue credited to an influencer, and who is driving the most of it, for the last 30 days.

  • Campaigns: group a link with the influencers promoting it, each gets their own ?ref= copy automatically. See Campaigns & Creator Links.

  • Influencers: every creator who has ever driven a click, ranked by clicks, sales, and revenue.

  • Activity: a raw feed of identified visitors and sales as they come in.

  • Connect your site: the setup checklist, live verification, and the exact snippet for your site. See Developer Quickstart.

  • Integrations: connect Shopify, WooCommerce, Stripe, or Polar so every completed order is tracked with no code at all. See No-Code Integrations.

  • Settings: attribution window, attribution model, cookie lifetime, and privacy controls. See Settings & Privacy.

Turning it on

The first time you open Attribution for a domain, you will see a single card explaining the feature with a Turn on for {your domain} button. Click it. Nothing changes for your existing links until you also install the snippet, so there is no risk in turning it on early.
