Influencer marketing tracking

See installs and sales per creator, not just clicks.

How do you track influencer marketing performance?

Start from the question of how to track influencer conversions: every creator needs something that identifies them end to end. A unique link does that. Clicks tell you who saw it, installs tell you who acted, and leads and sales tell you who paid. Group those links in a campaign for influencer campaign tracking, as described in the campaigns docs.

Why do promo codes and UTMs undercount installs?

A promo code only counts when the buyer remembers to type it. A UTM tag is lost when the person is sent through the App Store or Google Play. A tracked link with deferred deep linking keeps the creator attached through the install, so the first open can still be credited.

Each creator gets their own link to the same destination, for example a ?ref= handle. Smler records the click against that link and routes the visitor by device, which is covered in the deep linking use cases.

How do you attribute installs and sales to each influencer?

Installs come from the deferred link. Leads and sales are reported with the conversion endpoints, or arrive through store webhooks. Either way they are matched back to the click, and so to the creator. This is influencer attribution at the link level, not a guess from a promo code.

How do you track conversions from Shopify, WooCommerce, Stripe or Polar?

Connect the webhook for your store or payment tool and sales are credited to the creator whose link led to them. If you run your own checkout, send the sale from your server instead. Details are in the sale tracking docs.

How long should the attribution window be?

The default is 90 days, and you can configure it. For web purchases, a server-set first-party cookie can credit a sale for up to 400 days. Pick the window that matches how long your customers take to decide.

How do you report revenue per creator?

The worked example below shows the shape of the report: one row per creator with clicks, installs, sales, revenue and cost.

Worked example

Three creators each get a link for the same app campaign. Every number below is an example, not real data.

CreatorClicksInstallsSalesRevenueCostRevenue minus cost
Creator A2,00024030$1,350$500$850
Creator B3,50021014$630$500$130
Creator C90013020$900$300$600

Example, not real data.

Creator B drove the most clicks but the least revenue. Creator C cost the least and earned more than it cost. Per-creator links make that visible.

Wiring it up takes two steps.

1. Add the sm.js script to your site.

<script src="https://app.smler.io/api/v2/attribution/sm.js?key=YOUR_KEY"></script>

2. Report the sale from your server. Authenticate with the x-code header.

POST /api/v2/conversion/track/sale
x-code: YOUR_CODE

For web, you can optionally use the 400-day server-set first-party cookie. Request bodies and options are in the docs.

How do you calculate influencer ROI, EMV and fair rates?

Use the free calculators before and after a deal:

Planning numbers are estimates. Tracked revenue per creator is what you compare them against. For invites between users rather than creators, see referral links.

How much does influencer tracking cost?

The Free plan is $0 and includes 25,000 installs. Paid plans are Builder at $19, Team at $49, Scale at $129, and Enterprise from $299. See pricing for what each includes.

Frequently asked questions

Can I track influencers without promo codes?

Yes. Each creator gets a unique link, and the click, install, lead or sale is recorded against that link. The buyer does not have to type a code. You can still run a code alongside the link if you want a second signal.

How do I track app installs from an influencer?

Use the creator link with deferred deep linking. The link survives the App Store or Google Play step, so the first open can still be tied to the creator who sent it. Deferred deep linking is included on every plan, with 25,000 attributed installs free each month.

Which stores and payment tools connect?

Smler has webhooks for Shopify, WooCommerce, Stripe and Polar. You can also report a lead or sale from your own server with the conversion tracking endpoints.

What attribution window does Smler use?

The default attribution window is 90 days, and it is configurable. For web purchases you can also use a server-set first-party cookie that lasts up to 400 days.

Does Smler remove bot clicks and duplicate sales?

Smler applies bot filtering to clicks and duplicate-sale protection to sales, so the same sale reported twice is not counted twice.
